Scar revision surgery seeks to improve the appearance of a scar. Scars can be the result of injury or of a previous surgical procedure. It may take up to 1 year or longer for a scar to complete the full process of healing. Although most scars heal well and become less noticeable after that year of healing, sometimes the scar may still appear thick, raised or discolored.

Although it is not possible to remove a scar once you have one, unfavorable scars can sometimes be improved. If a scar is wide, thick or depressed, it may be improved by surgically removing the old scar and re-closing the wound with more precise plastic surgical suturing techniques. For some types of thickened or hard scars, or for scars that are sensitive or itchy, steroid injection may also help to improve them. If a scar is red or purple in color, laser treatments may improve the discoloration. Most scar treatments can be done as an outpatient, and many of these can be performed under a local anesthetic. This helps to minimize your down-time and get you back to full activity as soon as possible.
